Former Federal Prosecutor Cort VanOstran Joins Schlichter Bogard
Schlichter Bogard is pleased to announce that former federal prosecutor Cort VanOstran has joined the Firm. Cort’s distinguished record of public service and extensive experience in high-stakes complex litigation strengthens the Firm’s commitment to obtaining justice for individuals.
Immediately prior to joining Schlichter Bogard, Cort served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Eastern District of Missouri, where he investigated and prosecuted white-collar crime, including embezzlement, identity theft, and wire fraud. Among other accomplishments, Cort obtained a guilty verdict as trial counsel in a multi-count Hobbs Act case, and argued repeatedly on behalf of the United States in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit.
Prior to his government service, Cort spent several years litigating on behalf of plaintiffs in complex matters. In one case, Cort worked with a team of lawyers to represent a nationwide class of corn farmers alleging negligence and economic injury by the agribusiness giant Syngenta. A federal jury returned a verdict for $217.7 million for the farmers.
Earlier in his career, Cort served as a law clerk for Eastern District of Missouri U.S. District Judges John A. Ross and Audrey G. Fleissig, and in 2018 was the Democratic nominee for U.S. Congress in Missouri’s then-Second District. Cort received his J.D., cum laude, from Washington University School of Law, where he now serves as an adjunct professor, and earned his A.B., cum laude in field, from Harvard University.
“Cort’s extensive experience as an advocate for justice, including as a federal prosecutor and civil litigator, makes him an outstanding fit for our firm,” said Schlichter Bogard Partner Andrew Schlichter. “He is an exceptional trial lawyer, and we are thrilled that he has joined our practice.”
“I have long been aware of Schlichter Bogard’s stellar national reputation and its strong commitment to justice. In my legal career, my goal has been to zealously advocate for my clients, especially those who might not otherwise have a voice—and that personal aim aligns perfectly with Schlichter Bogard’s mission and values. I am thrilled to be joining such a respected litigation powerhouse,” said Mr. VanOstran.
