Jerry Schlichter Interviewed Regarding Private-Market Investments In 401(k) Plans
In an interview with Plan Sponsor Council of America, Schlichter Bogard Co-Managing Partner Jerry Schlichter addressed the growing push to include private‑market investments, including private equity, in employer‑sponsored 401(k) plans.
Among other concerns, Jerry’s view is that private‑market products present an “inherent contradiction” for typical retirement savers, noting that these investments are designed for investors who can tie up assets for extended periods and withstand limited liquidity. In contrast, most 401(k) plan holders need liquidity in the event of an unforeseen emergency.
He also emphasized that private-market fees and transparency requirements pose significant challenges for plan fiduciaries evaluating such options.
