Schlichter Bogard Featured in St. Louis Post-Dispatch Regarding Upcoming Trial Over Peru Smelter Claims

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch featured Schlichter Bogard in an article concerning an upcoming federal trial involving claims that a Peruvian smelter exposed local residents to toxic substances.

The article examines long-running litigation against Doe Run Resources Corp. and its owner, Ira Rennert, in which plaintiffs allege exposure to lead and other hazardous materials from a smelting complex in La Oroya, Peru. In the article, Co-Managing Partner Jerry Schlichter states that the defendants “went to La Oroya, an area of abject poverty, to operate the lead smelter and quadrupled its airborne lead.”

The case—filed nearly two decades ago—has now reached a pivotal stage, with the first group of plaintiffs set to present their claims before a U.S. jury. Jerry emphasized that, “after 18 years of resistance … the first of these children, who are now young adults, will finally have their day in court.”
