Schlichter Bogard Recognized by Pope Leo XIV and Cardinal Pedro Barreto for Work in 19-Year Lead Poisoning Case on Behalf of Peruvian Children and Young Adults

As reported by The Guardian, Peruvian Cardinal Pedro Barreto has recognized Schlichter Bogard following the Firm’s $150 million settlement on behalf of 1,373 Peruvian children and young adults who alleged injuries resulting from environmental contamination near the La Oroya smelter.

The article highlights Cardinal Barreto’s longstanding involvement with the La Oroya community, including his efforts, along with faith leaders and researchers, to bring international attention to the health impacts of the La Oroya smelter and to support affected families seeking accountability. The Guardian quoted Co-Managing Partner Jerry Schlichter, who noted the Firm’s and Cardinal Barreto’s shared “passion and conviction that this was a just cause” worth fighting for.

Additionally, in separate correspondence, Cardinal Barreto expressed his “admiration and respect” for Schlichter Bogard’s work on behalf of the plaintiffs, describing the settlement as the result of “19 years of unwavering legal advocacy.”

Cardinal Barreto’s letter also conveyed a message directly from Pope Leo XIV, who commended those involved in achieving the settlement. As Pope Leo XIV stated:

“I am writing to thank you for the information and—as soon as possible—to congratulate everyone who has worked on behalf of the population of La Oroya, especially the children, who have been so deeply affected by the environmental destruction in their area. I have received news of the out-of-court settlement with Doe Run in the U.S. It is a significant step forward—achieved after years of work. My thanks go to you and to everyone who made this outcome possible.”
