Schlichter Bogard Reaches Landmark $150 Million Settlement in Doe Run Lead Poisoning Litigation

As reported by several media outlets, Schlichter Bogard has secured a landmark $150 million settlement on behalf of more than 1,300 plaintiffs in one of the longest-running toxic exposure cases litigated in U.S. courts.

The litigation, originally filed in 2007 and later consolidated in federal court, alleged that Doe Run Resources Corp., its parent company The Renco Group, and related entities failed to reduce harmful emissions from a smelting complex in La Oroya, Peru, resulting in lead poisoning and other toxic injuries to children living near the facility.

“This resolution is the culmination of 19 years of relentless work to obtain justice for children who were innocent victims of one of the most severe environmental disasters of the modern era,” said Schlichter Bogard Co-Managing Partner Jerry Schlichter. “We are deeply proud to have stood with these children, now young adults, for the long haul.”
